The Pond

The day we had all went to the pond was a day I will always remember. It was a day all of us would remember. We didn't know it then but that day would change our lives. We were all hanging out at "the pond" and T.K. was the only one of us who actually had skates. The pond was a skating rink that was open year round next to the shopping center.

The reason it had been nicknamed the pond was because it was built on top of an old lake that the people used to refer to as the pond so it got its name.

The rest of us weren't supposed to be in there but we snuck in so we could be with T.K..

George, a classmate of ours, was the one who was put in charge of the rink at the late hours we were in there yet he was no where in sight.

--"he's probably making out with his many girlfriends"-- I thought then giggled, recalling the way he always bragged about girls being all over him at his work when in reality no girl in her right mind would ever go out with him.

--"Poor George, I hope he gets a girlfriend someday.--

My friend Davis tells Yolie a joke which sets her off laughing in her usual way but somehow I can't concentrate on what the other two are talking about. I keep watching T.K. swinging that hockey stick from side to side throwing that puck around, skating.

I can't help thinking about tomorrow when it will be our 1 year anniversary of being a couple.

T.K. looks to where we are, I wave to him and blow him a kiss, he smiles weakly and waves back. He's had a lot on his mind lately.

I hadn't been able to see him in a week which is why we had all agreed to meet up somewhere over the weekend. He said he'd be busy all week except for our anniversary. Yolie, Davis and I just happened to catch him in here by chance.

I had been really worried about him that week.

We had just about lost contact with eachother for a couple of days and then on Thursday when I had seen him during passing periods I noticed that his nose was swollen up and he had cuts on his forehead.

Yolie told me that the school bully along with four others had attacked them the day before as they were walking home from school.

They had barely gotten out of there alive.

And when I asked T.K. about it, he told me some excuse about getting hurt in football.

Davis calls my name.

I turn around.

He wants me to settle the argument he was having with Yolie about which Super Hero is the best

He says Batman.

She says Superman

I told them that I liked Spiderman that sets them off again, bickering and complaining to each other why each of them is right and the other is wrong.

I smile, --Some things will never change.--

I turn around to look at T.K. and for some reason he's in the equipment closet. He picks up the puck, and closed the door behind him. George was back on the look out. T.K. skated towards him to the skates checkout center and returned the stick and puck. Then he skated towards us.

" Hey what are you guys fighting about this time?" He asked Yolie and Davis.

"We're trying to decide what kind of Ice cream Mr. Freeze likes to eat." Yolie answered.

"Kids!" T.K. replied with a laugh.

Davis and Yolie were both a year older than T.K. and myself.

"Hey! Why don't we all go get some ice cream?" I suggested.

"Not a bad idea." Davis replied.

"You don't think anything is a bad idea." Yolie commented. That set them off yet again.

"What about you T.K.? You coming to gets some ice cream too?" I asked him.

"Naw! I think I'll stay out here a little longer."

"okay, we'll be back soon."

He held me in his arms and hugged me like there was no tommorrow. He then held his head extremely close to mine as if asking for my permission if he could kiss me. I accept and he does so once or twice really softly.

"I'll miss you." He whispered.

"I'll miss you more." I whisper back. Resting my head on his shoulder.

"I know." Was his response.

I quickly look at T.K., it was not his nature to be conceited. He was smiling down at me.

I kissed him softly once more before he enveloped me and kissed me hard.

"I love you Kari."

"I love you too, T.K.."

"Kari! Are you coming?" Yolie asked me a little annoyed at all the mush T.K. and I were displaying.

"yeah."

"Then come on!"

As I left I turned around once because I could have swore I heard T.K. call out my name and say "good bye!" or something like that, but all I saw was T.K. skating around the ice rink.

We came back from the ice cream parlor sooner than we expected because we forgot that at 10:30 p.m., it's usually closed. I had planned that when we got back to the rink I would check out some skates, but to my surprise by the time we came back they were closed. The rink had closed an hour early.

Out of the corner of my eye, I saw someone or something running away. I thought nothing more of it.

We walked into the pond anyway and what we saw I had not been prepared for.

There was a huge crowd of people there.

I saw that the paramedics were there for some weird reason. I tried to see what all the fuss was about.

"Help him!" Someone cried out.

"Get him into something dry." Another said.

I had no idea what had happened.

Yolie being five inches taller than myself snuck into the crowd to see what was going on. She quickly came back out from the crowd covering her mouth and crying hysterically. Davis immediately ran to her side and hugged her, silent tears coming out of his eyes. They both knew what was going on.

--Could it be that my T.K. might be hurt?-- I thought. --No! Kari! Don't think like that. T.K.'s okay. You just have to find him in this crowd.--

And then I saw it.

There on a sketcher lay a frozen T.K. drenched in water, dead! I screamed and then turned around, I couldn't stand the sight of him. It looked like he had been drowning in water and finally suffocated to death. Suddenly my whole world seemed to slow down significantly. I changed my mind about that but then saw the gigantic hole in the ice skating rink and realized that that was it.

Oh why did I leave him alone. Why? I felt it was my fault that maybe if I had stayed it wouldn't have happened but it was too late to think of that now.

T.K. was dead and there was nothing I could do to change that. The news reporters came and started doing a live coverage on the accident. I heard a mumbling coming from the skates check out center. I walked over and saw a very desperate George tied up and gagged on the floor.

I untied him and he told me everything.

"The bully's..." he said in between breaths. " the bullies from school .....came." breath. " They came with bats, two tied me up as the others went over and started attacking T.K.." Breath. " I tried to warn him but was too late. They hit me over the head and I was out. That's all I know."

I thanked George for letting me know it had not been an accident. I was relieved in a way knowing that my T.K. had not committed suicide. I didn't want to think of him as a suicidal person.

The guys who had caused T.K.'s death were found then locked up for murder. And the guy who had planned the attack was sent to the electric chair.

My life was never the same after that night. I kept having dreams in my sleep and waking up screaming bloody murder. I will never forgive those guys who had killed my beloved T.K.. Never.
